The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (2024)

All beards might be beautiful, but they aren’t created equal. Growing a beard is just the first, albeit the hardest, step. Once you have some length to your whiskers, you enter a whole new world of upkeep—washing, styling, maintaining, and most important, shaping. No matter what look you’re going for—everything from perma-stubble to gloriously bearded Chris Pine—a beard trimmer is your best friend.

Think of trimming your beard as getting a haircut, only you do it more often. It not only keeps your beard from looking unruly and sending you into Grizzly Adams territory but also makes it easier to maintain and style. Finding the right beard trimmer, however, is not always easy. Whatever kind of beard you have or your experience level, start with this list of the ten best beard trimmers and you’re on your way.

Out of all the beard trimmers we tested, this one rose to the top of the pack for a variety of reasons. The sturdy design feels like a real pair of clippers in your hand and has a metal casing instead of flimsy plastic. Inside is a powerful motor with BeardSense technology that detects the density of your beard and automatically adjusts the cutting power. The self-sharpening steel blades don’t need to be oiled and can be easily cleaned under running water thanks to the waterproof design. The battery life is unparalleled at a whopping six hours.

Then there is the functionality delivered by the 21 different attachments. Yes, you can use this to cut your hair, groom your body, or detail your face, ears, and nose, but we’re here to talk beards. There are technically two beard combs, one with an adjustable dial for precision trimming and a longer adjustable comb for medium lengths. You can also use the longer combs, meant for haircuts, on your beard if you have a longer style. All in all, this may just be the best beard trimmer—wait, best trimmer period—on the market.

Beard trimmers can get pricey, but you don’t always have to shell out an entire paycheck to get one that works for you—and works well. This thing is not only a beard trimmer but a full-on multipurpose tool that can trim and groom pretty much anyplace on your body. With a sleek design and durable stainless-steel blades, its quality is right up there with that of trimmers double (triple, even!) the price, and it comes with a variety of attachments to seal the deal. This thing can trim at a variety of lengths thanks to the three included guards but can also shave your body with the foil shaver attachment and trim ear and nose hair with that included attachment as well.

In our testing of beard trimmers, we were impressed that a trimmer with such a low price tag could keep up with higher-end trimmers this much. It cuts with ease, even on thicker beards, and the variety of length options is very much welcome, allowing you freedom to customize the length of your beard exactly how you want it. The whole device is rechargeable via a USB cable, though we will say that the battery life is the one area that betrays the price tag. It’s just not as good as that of many of the other models, and with age it dwindles even further. But that could be a compromise you’re willing to make if you’re looking to save a few bucks—and wouldn’t be mad at it.

When you plan to take your beard trimmer on the road with you (and why wouldn’t you), you want to make sure it’s going to be up to the job. Bonus points if it can handle multiple jobs so you can reduce the amount of stuff you’ve stuffed into your Dopp kit. This handy trimmer checks all those boxes, with multiple length guards and a few handy attachments like an ear/nose hair trimmer and a detail shaver for crisp lines.

The trimmer itself is relatively simple, with self-sharpening blades that power through thick whiskers easily, a charge indicator light that alerts you when the 65-minute of run time is getting low, and a sleek, durable design that fits well in your hand. It’s not completely waterproof, but the attachments are washable by rinsing them under a faucet. Best of all, with a price this low, you don’t have to worry about replacing it if you lose your luggage.

Trimmers are always a good idea if you have a short or medium-length beard, but if you rock a longer style, sometimes a trimmer doesn’t leave enough length and you’re relegated to scissors. This trimmer, however, is ideal for longer beards because not only do you get a whopping 40 different length options between the two guards and the rotary dial, but it can leave up to 20 millimeters in length. That’s one of the greatest lengths we’ve found in a trimmer. It also comes with an attachment that’s designed to cut the hair on your head and can leave up to 21 millimeters in length, so you could use that on your beard too, if you’re feeling spicy.

The German-designed trimmer itself is a great one, especially for the price point. It has all the features you want in a beard trimmer, like a rechargeable battery, sharp blades, and an easy-to-clean head and attachments. Speaking of attachments, apart from the length guards, it also comes with an ear/nose hair tool, a detail trimmer, and a small foil shaver for extra-crisp lines. Since this is on the inexpensive side, there aren’t too many other features, but that’s okay. What you really need in a trimmer is for it to trim hair well, and this one does.

  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (29)Easy-to-clean attachments and head
  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (30)Rechargeable via USB charger
Cons
  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (31)Battery life can decrease with long-term use

Calling something a short beard can be a bit of a misnomer, because short beards can vary from slightly grown-out stubble to something much longer. However, no matter how long or short your beard is, a beard trimmer is an essential tool for beard maintenance. This trimmer offers 40 different lengths between the integrated rotary dial and the two comb attachments, plus a stubble guard, so no matter how short your beard is, it keeps it trimmed and groomed.

This straightforward beard trimmer doesn’t have a ton of superfluous features, instead focusing on what a trimmer should do best: trim. The motor is plenty powerful and blades plenty sharp to power through thick whiskers, and the good battery life means that you probably aren’t going to lose power halfway through your trimming session (provided, of course, you keep it charged). And while it’s not the cheapest on this list, it’s not going to break the bank either, making it a perfect trimmer for beginners or the more budget conscious among us.

Cons
  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (36)Motor can lose power with long-term use

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to change up his look frequently, or just likes the idea of changing his look, this trimmer is the one that gives you the most options. There are eight length combs included, each of which is handily color coded, that combine to give you a whopping 45 different length options. To get all those options, you need to adjust the blade as well, but that’s easy on this trimmer—you just twist the head casing. So whether you have a short, medium, or long beard—or like to change it up—this trimmer can definitely cut the length you want.

There are other features too, like a travel lock and an LED display to show battery life. Speaking of battery life, this one has three full hours of use on a single charge, which is pretty insane considering that other trimmers at a similar price point often have about half that. This trimmer is sure to impress beard beginners and old pros alike. It certainly impressed us in our testing process.

  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (41)Not good for long beards

If you rock the perma-stubble look or have a shorter beard, sometimes a beard trimmer can feel like too much for you. Ditto if you’re doing the mustache thing or have facial hair that’s a bit more elaborate than your classic beard. In those cases, the OneBlade is your ideal tool. This trimmer really shines when you use it as a shaver, edger, and detailer. It shaves as well as a traditional razor, and the small blade allows you to create crisp lines and details that you might otherwise do with a T-blade or any other detailer.

This one in particular is also great for guys with shorter beards and stubble, because it comes with a length comb that can easily adjust between 14 different lengths. It’s never going to get super long, but the highest setting gives enough length for shorter beard styles to stay intact. We’ve found in our rigorous testing of the OneBlade through the years that it really is a go-to grooming tool for pretty much any guy, but this version is the one you want if you’re bearded. You can’t argue with its ease of use, great results, and portability.

We get it: Why buy one tool to do one thing when you could buy one tool that does almost everything? We will always stand by multifunctional anything, which is why this all-in-one trimmer kit received top marks in our testing. Yes, it’s a beard trimmer (and a damn good one, too) with as many length settings as you could hope for, but it can also be used as a body groomer via the foil shaver attachment, a hair clipper via the longer length combs, and even an ear- and nose-hair trimmer and detailer when you pop on those respective attachments.

Features-wise, it has some that you’d expect to find in much more expensive trimmers, like the fact that it’s waterproof and has an LED display that shows you how much charge is left. And we can’t forget the included cartridge razor, which comes in handy even if you have a beard, by allowing you to achieve supersharp lines and clean up your neck and face. Like we said, this tool kit really does do it all.

  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (50)Can be used corded or cordless
Cons
  • The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (51)Not good for detail work

The key to beard maintenance is making it easy, especially if you’re a beginner and are just getting used to having a beard. (Congrats on making it through the grow-out stage.) That’s where this trimmer shines. In our testing, we couldn’t find a trimmer that was easier to use. Pop on the length comb and spin the rotary dial to unlock 19 different lengths without needing to switch guards. The powerful motor and sharp stainless-steel blades help this power through even the thickest beards like butter for a smooth, uniform finish.

There are also plenty of additional features that you’d expect in a trimmer at this price point. It’s fully waterproof, which is handy for cleaning; can be used with the cord or without; and has a good battery life when you want to go cordless. The one thing we’ll note is that this is clearly designed for beard trimming and does that very, very well, but it isn’t ideal for detail work or very short lengths. Even with that disclaimer, though, we can’t think of a reason this wouldn’t be a top choice.

There’s a certain point in your beard journey when you might want to move away from combs and do things a bit more freehand, like your barber. This is especially true if you have a long beard and combs might not really work for you in general. When that time comes, a professional-style trimmer like this comes in handy. This pro-style trimmer is made for both barbers and home trimmers alike, which means you’ll get professional quality at home. The battery life alone is extremely impressive at an incredible eight hours.

The blade of this trimmer comes already zero-gapped, which means you can get incredibly crisp and smooth lines right out of the box with no adjustment needed. It’s ideal for lineups, cheek and neck lines, and more (like mustaches). We’ve tested a lot of trimmers, and this one really does measure up. Though we will say again, this is not a beginner trimmer. If you’re ready to take the guard rails off, though, this is your best bet.

What to Consider When Buying a Beard Trimmer

The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (57)

There are plenty of things to consider when deciding on a beard trimmer, but these are the most important in our opinion (apart from price).

Blades: A trimmer is only as good as its blades, since those are what’s responsible for, you know, trimming. You want blades that are durable and sharp and won’t dull or rust over time. Look for materials like stainless steel and titanium, which are the most durable and don’t get dull as quickly. Some models will note that their blades are self-sharpening, which is great if you don’t want to worry about sharpening the blades yourself or are worried about replacing them frequently. On that note, it’s worth checking to see how readily available replacement blades for a particular model are, since you will likely need to replace them eventually.

Combs: Unless you’re a seasoned professional or have a really long beard, you’ll probably want to utilize length guards (also known as combs) when you trim your beard. This allows you to trim your beard at a uniform length the whole away around and also can help you easily adjust to multiple lengths, like if you want to fade the sides of your beard or use multiple lengths for your style. Most beard trimmers will come with some guards, but make sure the one you choose has a guard that’s long enough for your desired beard style, especially if you have a medium or long beard.

Cord versus Cordless: Most beard trimmers these days are cordless, which allows you to use them more freely without worrying about a cord getting in the way. (Plus it’s great for travel.) Corded models are generally more powerful, but you need to be near an outlet to use them. We generally recommend cordless models because they’re just easier to use, but which one you choose is a personal choice.

Battery Life: If you go with a cordless model, battery life should be taken into account. The last thing you want is to be in the middle of a beard trim and have your trimmer run out of juice. We recommend going with the longest battery life you can afford just to be safe, especially if you are planning to travel with your trimmer.

Additional Features: You’ll often find a variety of other features in beard trimmers, most of which aren’t essential but are great to have. More expensive models will often have things like LED displays that show battery life, waterproof casings that allow for easy cleaning or even in-shower use, rotary dials to adjust lengths without combs, and sometimes even technology that senses hair density. Many beard trimmers without these work well, but having them can make for pleasant, and in some cases more efficient, use.

How to Clean Your Beard Trimmer

The 10 Best Beard Trimmers for Every Type of Facial Hair (58)

Cleaning your beard trimmer helps keep the blades sharp and ensures a better cutting experience every time. We recommend cleaning your beard trimmer after every use, but if you’re not the kind to do that, at least once a week should be fine. Most beard trimmers come with a cleaning brush, which you want to use to get rid of any built up hairs and gunk on the blades (you can also use a towel to wipe it off if you don’t have a brush). Some models will note that you can run the head and/or attachments under water to clean them. This is, of course, very handy, but you shouldn’t do that unless the directions specifically say you can. Unless the casing is water resistant, you could risk water damage to the motor. Once it’s all cleaned off, apply a couple drops of blade oil and turn the motor on for a few seconds to distribute it.
